"I'm going to be in the area" — the small-shop service call trick
A simple line that makes you look established when a contractor or homeowner asks you to swing by for a look or a service call.
When you're just starting out and trying to get in with a contractor, a designer, or a homeowner, every service call and site visit feels expensive. Driving across town for a 15-minute look-see eats your day. But saying no makes you sound small, and saying yes every time burns you out and tells them your time isn't worth much.
There's a simple line that solves both problems: "Oh, you know what — I'm going to be in the area on Wednesday. Let's make that work."
It does three things at once:
- You sound busy and established. Established shops batch their site visits. Saying you'll already be in the area signals that you have other work nearby — without ever having to claim it directly.
- You control the schedule. Instead of dropping everything to chase a maybe-job, you slot it into a day that works for you. If you really do have another stop nearby, great. If not, pick the day you were already planning to be out quoting and stack two or three visits together.
- You stop bleeding windshield time. Two or three visits in one loop is a normal workday. One visit across town is a half-day gone for nothing.
The honest version of this is even better: actually pick one day a week — Wednesday, say — as your "out in the field" day. Every casual look-see, service call, and meet-and-greet gets pushed to that day. When someone asks if you can swing by, the answer is always the same: "I'm in your area Wednesday, let's make that work." You're not making it up. You really will be out there.
Once you're more established and the relationship is built, you can be more flexible. But early on, this one line protects your time, makes you look professional, and gives you a clean reason to say "not today" without ever actually saying no.
