Owner's income — paying yourself honestly

Why your effective hourly rate matters more than your monthly draw, and how to grow into the rate you deserve.

Most shop owners under-pay themselves for years without realizing it. The number that matters isn't your monthly draw — it's your effective hourly rate: how much you actually earn for every hour you're at the bench, on the road, or quoting at the kitchen table.

When you first fill these numbers in, the hourly figure is almost always lower than what you tell yourself you're worth. That's normal. Don't lie to the spreadsheet. The point of this exercise is to see reality, then build a plan to grow toward the number you deserve.

Raise the rate gradually — your existing clients have expectations. Big jumps lose relationships. Steady, deliberate increases keep your book full while the math improves.
